One goal of the GSBF Bonsai Garden at Lake Merritt (BGLM) is to educate people in the art and science of Bonsai. In an effort towards achieving that goal, the BGLM has teamed with the East Bay Bonsai Society (EBBS) to help interested students get started in the study of bonsai. Highly trained EBBS members volunteer as teachers for the Bonsai Beginners’ Classes held at the BGLM Workshop on the fourth Sunday of each month (except February and December).

Upon completion of the class you are invited to attend EBBS meetings and events to continue your bonsai e  ducation. EBBS meet at the Lakeside Garden Center, 666 Bellevue Ave., Lake Merritt, on the second Wednesday of each month at 7:30 PM to socialize and attend lectures about bonsai techniques by bonsai masters. If you are interested in participating in a Bonsai Beginners’ Class, please RSVP here.

On November 26, between 1 and 3 p.m., the last Bonsai Beginners’ Class for the year 2017 was presented by EBBS teachers Janet Nelson and Rick Trumm at the Bonsai Garden at Lake Merritt. The weather was rainy for most of the day. However, the class of 11 students carried on in the garden’s workshop and ended with a tour of the bonsai on display.
