• COVID CLOSURE – Update 2021

December 6, 2020 by

We have been advised that Alameda County’s Shelter in Place Order is still in place.  We have now been informed that Oakland is closing the Gardens at Lake Merritt to the public on the weekends until at least 4/1/2021. Our schedule has been updated with some possible hours. Best practice is to the call the garden to see if a docent is on duty.

Hopefully we can return to welcoming the public back to our garden early in the New Year after flattening the curve.

On Dec 5, 2020, Curator Kathy Shaner and staff worked to put a few new trees on display. We hope you can see them in person soon. We will keep posting images of work being done as we can. This closure hits us during the heavy tree re-potting season and will be challenging for us to work as individuals on big trees using social distancing. Until next we meet again:

Newly donated white pine.

Newly donated cork oak given to the garden. It was being prepped for re-potting.

Our work area where we refine trees for display.

Cork oak now on display with a new pot and positioning.

Winter is a great time to appreciate the branch structure of our trees.
